About Us

It is the mission of the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department to dedicate itself in protecting the lives and property of the residents we serve from the adverse effects of fire or the exposure to dangerous conditions caused by man or nature.

We will accomplish our mission through continuous public education, rescue service, fire suppression and extensive training. The Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department will maintain a staff of well-trained professional volunteer emergency responders that are ready to perform these tasks with selfless integrity, honor, pride and honesty.

We will continue to be a proactive emergency response organization providing safe and efficient service to all residents and visitors.

Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department

Our tradition of operations as a volunteer department is not only a community committment but also a testament to the protection of our wonderful home by those who have come to make their lives here.  A volunteer department is unique in that all the firefighters who serve do so in a strictly volunteer capacity. In addition to day jobs and other committments, the volunteers participate in rigorous weekly training and continued opportunities for skill building to expand the departments abilities for emergency response. 

The volunteers respond to all District calls including many areas of expertise including:

  • Structure fires
  • Vehicle extrications
  • Wildland firefighting
  • Hazmat containment
  • Swiftwater rescue
